About THE PROJECT

The Swedish Transport Administration (SWE: Trafikverket, TRV) is s govermental branch in Sweden tasked with maintaining and developing all road and rail infrastructure in Sweden. During my time as an UX-designer I redesigned several internal systems where this traffic camera system is one of them.

In order to correctly manage traffic cameras around Sweden, operators need a clear situational understanding of their equipment. The system for this was neglected, difficult to understand and as a result, rarely used. The goal was to, based on best practices in situational awareness and UX, create a system to better cater to the employee needs.

Challenges:
  • The old system was neglected and rarely used, therefore it was difficult to understand the old system from a user perspective.
  • The goals for the project was very broad also requiring broad user research.
  • Due to the differences in geographical location the workshops and interviews had to be done digitally.

In order to get a grip of the current needs of the employees, interviews were conducted with all roles needing to understand their technical equipment related to cameras. The needs were analyzed using thematic analysis and new functions and design were proposed.

Early wireframe

Several workshops with multiple roles where conducted to discover new insights about the wireframes which eventually grew into a prototype in close collaboration with developers. A frame from the prototype is provided below (blurring due to security reasons).

Key takeaways:
  • Digital workshops need extra preparation in order to be successful.
  • Close collaboration with stakeholders and developers creates a more agile and resilient design process.
